OSI Industries Sets World Standard For Sustainability

In 1972 the Club of Rome published Limits To Growth, a book that put forward a dire warning about the rapidly growing global population and the alarming rate at which the world’s resources were being used to sustain all those people.

Most major industries shrugged their shoulders and maintained “business as usual.” But OSI Industries took another view. From a very early stage in its aggressive plans to grow in size, OSI Industries also incorporated a philosophy that recognized the extreme importance of sustainability.

The given most credit for a far-reaching vision of sustainability is Sheldon Lavin. He became CEO of OSI Industries in 1975. He still holds that position today and has presided over the expansion of a company that has become a model for the world in terms of environmental management.

Lavin was determined that OSI Industries would become a premier processors of meat in the world, but at every step of that development, the concepts of sound environmental practice and sustainable use of resources would play a central role in how business got done.

Today OSI Industries stands as a model for the rest of the world. The company has leveraged high technology and made intensive use of alternative forms of energy as it opened new facilities across the globe. Today it is operating in 17 countries with 70 facilities.

It is not an uncommon site to visit an OSI plant and see banks of solar panels sprouting from rooftops or power configurations that employ wind power. Each facility is also fitted with low-flow faucets to preserve water, as well as ingenious water recycling systems — and that’s just for starters.

Reducing waste has also been an bona fide obsession with OSI engineers. From the plastics and cardboard used for shipping containers to the trucks it employs to deliver products to end users, OSI has found ways to leave behind a bare minimum of waste.

OSI has a long-term goal to become a “carbon-zero” operation. That means no net contribution of greenhouse gases as its dozens of operations process and deliver fresh foods to the market.

Ryan Seacrest: Mr. New Year

On New Year’s Eve, many on the east coast stood outside, soaking in the rain and waiting for fireworks. One of them was Mr. New Year’s Eve himself, Ryan Seacrest, ringing in the new year with a couple thousand of his closest friends and Jenny McCarthy. Ever the professional, Ryan Seacrest stood outside in New York City for hours while the city collected over an inch of rain that evening. Now the host of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, Ryan Seacrest bore the elements like a badge of honor. Taking over for the icon, Seacrest himself has filled the shoes impeccably, rolling with the punches as they inevitably come.

Showcasing clothing from his own clothing line, Ryan stayed as warm as possible while still looking fashionable. Ryan launched his own clothing brand, Distinction, with the idea that red carpet fashion doesn’t need to come with a hefty price-tag. With ample experience living in New York City himself, Distinction features items that are fashionable yet functional, keeping customers both warm and stylish. Now the co-host of popular morning show Live with Kelly and Ryan, Ryan has been splitting his time between Los Angeles and New York City, becoming familiar with the cold winters and tough conditions for several years now.

Far from being his only job, Ryan also stays incredibly busy with hosting American Idol as well as his long-running radio show, On Air with Ryan. Ryan discovered his love of media through radio and it has been an avenue that he has steadfastly pursued no matter how busy he gets. He is so passionate about the benefits of radio that his charity work, The Ryan Seacrest Foundation, is dedicated to bringing media centers to children’s hospitals. The idea behind The Ryan Seacrest Foundation is that these centers open up a creative outlet for children battling illnesses who otherwise would not have had this opportunity. Ryan’s work has gained the attention of many celebrities who have lent their time and support.

Betsy DeVos and the Educational Choice Movement

Betsy DeVos is one of the most polarizing figures in American politics today. She has been known for her educational choice campaign, as well as school safety reform and philanthropy in education. Since her appointment to the 11th US Secretary of Education office, she has been criticized for her policies by those who say it sets up public schools for failure.

DeVos sits calmly in her interview with Lesley Stahl, gearing up for “60 Minutes.” You can tell that the questions planned are hard-hitting, with Stahl picking up reports on standardized testing. In fact, DeVos is asked what she thinks of standardized test scores going up by 20 percent in the last 10 years. Then, she is asked whether any of her programs have been successful. DeVos was just appointed in 2017 and many states don’t have to change their education policies.

DeVos talks about school performance in Florida and Louisiana. She says how Florida has excelled with educational choice. The state has the most educational choice options, including magnet programs, private schools, charter schools, virtual schools, and homeschooling programs.

In addition, Florida has a tuition-based scholarship program that makes it possible for kids to go to a school of their choice once accepted. The program has been helping students who would have been zoned for schools in failing districts. While DeVos wants to tackle that problem, she believes that policies should be student first.

When asked whether public funds are being used for private schools, DeVos says that people who say that don’t understand. Currently, educational choice campaigns and funding comes from philanthropy, through donations from DeVos Family Foundation, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and Sam Walton. In total, there have been over $150 million donations to educational choice.

DeVos isn’t deterred by her opponents. She has been working in educational choice for a long time, ever since the 1980s when the Reagan Administration first came out with reports that showed America’s schools were underperforming.

In addition to her work in educational choice, she has been working in school safety reform. Gun violence caused questions to arise over whether guns should be allowed by teachers, and DeVos answered that she wasn’t sure she liked the idea of more guns on school campuses. New policies were introduced before the 2018-2019 school season in order to prevent gun violence. Schools have been working on new drills and safety measures as well.
