A Look At The Quest To End Citizens United

In 2015 a new political action committee (PAC) was formed to address campaign finance reform. The PAC, End Citizens United, seeks to address the Supreme Court ruling of 2010 that gave corporations and high net worth individuals free reign to spend as much as they want on political campaigns across the United States. This money has allowed them to completely drain out everyone else’s voice in politics. End Citizens United supports Democratic candidates that will pass laws in order to reign this spending in. The ultimate goal would be a Constitutional Amendment being passed in order to completely end the Supreme Courts ruling.

In the first month that End Citizens United launched the PAC was able to raise $2 million from a network of small donors. By the time of the 2016 election, they expected to raise $25 to $30 million in total. The PAC officially endorsed a number of Democratic candidates including Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado and former Senator Russ Feingold of Wisconsin.

The Communications Director for End Citizens United said that, while there are other groups that are addressing campaign finance reform, their PAC is different. Rather than just lobbying congressman and senators in Washington D.C., End Citizens United seeks to get people elected who are dedicated to the issue and could change existing laws.

Passing a constitutional amendment, though, will be a very difficult undertaking. In order to a constitution amendment to be passed, it has to receive two-thirds of the vote in both the House and Senate, and have three-fourth of states ratify it. The last constitutional amendment to be passed was in 1992.

On the positive side, though, campaign finance reform groups like End Citizens United keep campaign finance reform in the public’s awareness. It also helps to keep politicians and the Supreme Court from making the money flooding the political system even worse.

End Citizen United supports Democratic candidates over Republican candidates for a simple reason. the Republican leadership to date has resolutely stood against any effort to change the system.

Tiffany Miller is the current President and Executive Director of End Citizens United. She has a long history of political involvement including working for Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius. Another top leader is Jody Murphy who is the Political Director. Among his other political activities, he has served the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee as the Political Director and Independent Expenditure Director.

End Citizen United has a Board of Directors that oversees the PAC’s activities. Sitting on the board are Ron Barber, Jessica Vanden Berg, Christopher Massicotte, and Lanae Erickson Hatalsky. Among their experiences, Ron Barba served is the former congressional representative of Arizona’s 2nd District.
